 ‘Couple’
oil on canvas
Pradip Bhowmick

Pradip's art is illuminated by his vivacious fusion of folk styles, idioms, and imagery into contemporized illustrations of human situations. His informal figurations, often animated with quizzical wit, reflect – with individualized variations – his artistic immersion in both the spirit and the formal components of folk art vocabulary, in a spectrum of regional styles.

His works offer no social or philosophical message, but Pradip's creativity with color and texture charges his interpretations of human scenes and circumstances with distinctive character. His images are simply delineated informal interpretations of typical folk images. But they acquire resonance and energy from their fusion with expressive modern and symbolic elements. Often, raised, textured relief effects are worked in, to build perspective into the traditional two-dimensional format of folk art. And background offsets of traditional designs in neutral tones and subtle color mixes, weave variations of depth into the typically bright hues of the folk palette to energize the compositions.

So ‘Life' captures with quirky realism a typical human mood, though the theme of the image itself – evoking a popular ‘Kalighat Pat' motif of life in affluent middle class Bengal – is set in an earlier period. Again, Radha stands ‘Waiting' for her beloved in the eternal style and posture of Rajasthani miniature paintings, but her attitude, expression and styling of hair and dress reflect a vividly modern animation. In ‘War', the central image of the alert double-faced warrior – looking ahead and behind at the same time – is set against a backdrop of men and stylized horses, but line and blended color blur around them in a swirl of movement. ‘The Thinker' too, while simulating formality, is a thoroughly modern interpretation of a famous theme, both in its expressiveness and its innovative style. Bengal's traditional ‘Durga' image strides into a vivid ‘Warrior' pose against a dramatically textured backdrop; and ‘Past' recreates, with rich artistic embellishments, the effect of a stylized goat's head embossed on a textured setting, rather like an ancient clay seal.

Another facet of Pradip's imagination is reflected in his creativity with murals, which he executes on commission. Specimens of his work are displayed in two of Calcutta 's largest metro stations, at Kalighat and Jatin Das
