‘Courtyard’

Paresh Maity

Since he first sold one of his haunting water color paintings to the British Museum in London at the age of twenty four, Paresh Maity has come a long way. It was Maity's extraordinary talent with watercolors that first attracted the attention of the art world. The iridescent charm that illuminates his early paintings echoes his refined perception of the nuances of light on landscape. Even now, he remains one of India 's finest painters of pure watercolor.

From a purely figurative style, he traveled later towards abstraction, though his pre-occupation was still with nature. But all the while he continued to travel widely over India , assimilating color and image, and filtering them through his subconscious to create in his latest series, some vibrant works in oil on canvas. His figurative themes in this series were largely inspired by the people and colors of Rajasthan.

Uma Nair writes about them, “The human body in the paintings along with the faces and their diagonal status on the frame have a world of complexities within…which gives us the first clue that a sari or musical instrument is more than just a fashion statement. The symbol is what sustains and you are forced to think of the life force of a river flowing…”

The distinguishing feature of all his works, from earliest to latest is their feeling of experiential truth; of assimilation, celebration and fusion of visual and emotional experience into works of resounding power and sensitivity. He ranks today among India 's top contemporary artists
