A feeling of profound angst is contained in Debashish'
earlier works. They are, in his words ‘monologues of
decadent times, of an all-pervasive crisis of values
and of alienation' reflected in his ‘painter's desire
to show off lines, colors and structures'. Color and
pattern applied onto canvas evolve in his work, into
turbulent compositions of unpremeditated form.

He offers however an answer to his own anguish in his
latest series on ‘Meditation'. With these evocative
paintings (he works also with sculpture, installations
and murals), he builds his personal pathway towards
equilibrium. Strong simple images are delineated on
large expanses of a single color. This symbolic unity
of color is nuanced with subtle expressive variations
that echo the many faceted textures of ‘meditation'.
These works are startlingly different, in their convincing
projection of a simple but profound peace.
