  ‘Nostalgic’
oil on canvas
Bhaskar Bhattacharjee

Bhaskar Bhattacharjee's immaculately designed motifs of man and animal in nature, exude the ethereal quality of images visualized in a dream - or recollected from another place or time. His visually arresting pictures are conceived in vibrant colors and meticulously designed detail, to evoke a feeling of almost mystical awareness of the 'primitive' harmonies that underlie all relationships in nature.

His human figures too, have an aura of detached, brooding, other-worldliness which is accentuated by the surreal landscapes they inhabit - of oversized flowers, fruits swollen to unbelievable size, branches stretching to impossible horizontals, and exquisitely stylized animals. A cyclist on a village road; a woman examining herself in a mirror; a flute player poised against a deep blue night surrounded by forest creatures frozen into enchantment by his music; a girl reaching from her window towards a star-studded night; a boy lying aslant a patterned landscape of fields, river and gigantic flowers; even human figures at a carnival, all seem absorbed in their personal reverie in surroundings that partake of the quality of dreams.

The artist visualizes his scenes in the stylized two-dimensional format of folk art, enriched with the elaborate patterning of Indian miniature painting. But within this, additional dimensions of rhythm and richness are created through his imaginative handling of space and color.

Saturated, enamel-like colors illuminate his compositions. In addition, his expanses of color are minutely textured and shaded to build in depth, so that they seem to glow in their tonal distinctions. Space, though not defined by perspective, is enhanced by the creation of new frames of color and design to offset or contain images within the main format; and by the insertion of unexpected borders and panels of decorative figuration that create further patterns on his canvas.
